Andrew Garfield’s months-long quest to tell absolutely nobody about his role in Spider-Man: No Way Home is pretty well documented at this point. But, surprisingly, he didn’t even share the news with his Amazing Spider-Man co-star and ex-girlfriend, Emma Stone—even when she asked.
In a new episode of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield opened up about who he was allowed to tell about his involvement in the film (apparently nobody), and Stone—who played Gwen Stacy opposite his stint as Spidey—was not on that list.
“Emma kept on texting me. She was like, ‘Are you in this new Spider-Man film?’ And I was like, ‘I don’t know what you’re talking about!’ She was like, ‘Shut up, just tell me,’ And like, I honestly… I kept it going, even with her, it’s hilarious,” Garfield said. “And then she saw it and was like, ‘You’re a jerk!’”
Garfield previously told The Wrap that keeping his involvement under wraps was both “stressful” and “weirdly enjoyable.” So as he continues his press run for Tick, Tick...BOOM!, which snagged him a Golden Globe nod, and The Eyes of Tammy Faye, he’s now joking about the whole thing a bit more.
“There were moments where I was like, ‘God, I hate lying.’ I don’t like to lie and I’m not a good liar, but I kept framing it as a game,” Garfield said. “And I kept imagining myself purely as a fan of that character, which is not hard to do,” he explained. “I placed myself in that position of, ‘Well, what would I want to know? Would I want to be toyed with? Would I want to be lied to? Would I want to be kept on my toes guessing? Would I want to discover it when I went to the theater? Would I want to be guessing, guessing, guessing.’”
As for the film itself, No Way Home topped the box office in the U.S. for four weeks before Scream eventually supplanted it this weekend. It has already passed the $700 million mark, as it now sits as the fourth-highest earning domestic film of all-time, only behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar.
