Sophie Turner is known at this point for her amusing reactions to Game of Thrones plots. Never forget her wine-drunk Easter comments on Arya and Gendry getting together. And she's more than a little game to hear fan theories now that the series is over. Take, for example, her shocked reaction to the theory that Game of Thrones gave the game away in the show's very first promotional poster.
As we all know by now, the series ends with a high fantasy version of the Good Friday Agreement: the North separating under Queen Sansa while Bran is left to rule the Six Kingdoms. Some fans think the series' first poster, showing a dejected Sean Bean on the Iron Throne while a raven sits on the arm, is a giveaway of the outcome.
Turner was alerted to the theory by her X-Men costar Jessica Chastain.
“The poster for the first season—do you know what’s on it?” Chastain asked Turner in a recent interview. “It’s your papa on the Throne, and there’s a raven on the throne right next to him.”
Beyond that twist, which caused her to shout and put her finger to her lips in the interview, Turner said she hasn't gone back to look for foreshadowing of the show's ending. She did mock Sansa's initial desire to be queen before the harsh reality of Westeros altered the course of her life.
"In the first episode of Season 1 Sansa goes, 'I want to be queen mommy someday,'" she shared in a mocking tone.
Of course, there are many alternative explanations to the poster. Sean Bean was the series’ biggest star, for one. And his character Ned Stark was forced to deal with the unexpected responsibility of working for the king, symbolized by the throne. Ravens have long been used as symbols of bad news or misfortune. And given what happened to Ned—and the actual use of ravens to share important information in the Thrones world—it’s not exactly out of place. But that couldn’t curdle Turner’s genuine shock upon learning of the theory.
Of course, the real giveaway of the series ending came from apparent psychic and female knight Gwendoline Christie. The actress who plays Brienne of Tarth called the end of the show all the way back in 2017. "What we know about the show is that it constantly surprises you, so I'm wondering if it might be Bran," she said in an interview with Extra. "Just because we keep seeing the world from his perspective, don't we. We keep seeing his visions."
