Ocean’s 8, the gender-flipped addition to the Ocean's franchise, walked away with a $41.5 million heist from the box office its debut weekend. As anticipated, the film set a record debut for the franchise and beat out other films to secure the No. 1 spot in theaters, according to Deadline.
The franchise that began with the team of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, and friends back in 2001 received an all-woman, all-star cast makeover that lured audiences wanting to see Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Rihanna, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, and Helena Bonham Carter pull off a historic heist at one of the biggest social events of the year: the Met Gala.
By Friday, the film was already beating out its predecessors. Ocean's 8 brought in $15.9 million on its opening day, topping Ocean's Twelve, which earned $14.7 million. Ocean’s Eleven followed behind with $13.3 million, while Ocean’s Thirteen is in the last place with $13.1 million.
Overseas, the film took a haul of $12.2 million, making a global total of $53.7 million for its first weekend. Ocean's Thirteen debuted to $36.1 million in 2007, preceded by $39.2 million for Ocean's Twelve in 2004 and $38.1 million in 2001 for Ocean's Eleven. The film is already close to matching its $70 million cost to produce.
Solo came in the No. 2 spot at the box office, making $15.2 million this weekend. The film is Disney’s first loss from the Star Wars empire. Meanwhile, Deadpool 2 came in No. 3, making $13.7 million in its fourth weekend.
