The movie, which was written and directed by Lorene Scafaria, will arrive in theaters on Sept. 13, 2019. Scafaria previously directed The Meddler and Seeking a Friend for the End of the World. The drama is based on the New York Magazine article "The Hustlers at Scores" by Jessica Pressler. "Hustlers follows a crew of savvy former strip club employees who band together to turn the tables on their Wall Street clients," a press release for the film states.
The film will mark Cardi's feature debut. Scafaria previously told Vulture how difficult it was to cast her. "I chased Cardi for two years," Scafaria said. The director revealed it all fell into place after sending the "Bodak Yellow" rapper a DM. "I got back a 'We know, we'll get back to you," Scafaria said. "I didn’t know if I was talking to her or somebody else."
Scafaria continued: "I have two phone numbers in my cell: Cardi 1 and Cardi 2. I'm not sure if either of them are actually Cardi."
