Warner Bros. just released a new trailer for Just Mercy, based on a memoir by attorney Bryan Stevenson.
The Destin Daniel Cretton-directed movie centers on the real-life story of Walter McMillian (played by Jamie Foxx), who's in prison for the murder of an 18-year-old woman despite evidence proving his innocence. Michael B. Jordan plays Stevenson, a young attorney and Harvard graduate who takes his talents to Alabama to defend the wrongly condemned and/or those without proper legal reps, McMillian included.
In a note to fans back in July, Foxx detailed the film's status as an "artistic journey" for all involved."It has been humbling and gratifying at the same time," he said. "[Michael B. Jordan] embodied Bryan Stevenson.... the young liberating lawyer... and will once again will leave us with another [cinematic] gem... I am honored to be able to stand along side him to bring to life a story that will impact the world in the most heartfelt and courageous way."
Based on the trailer, the film looks like a surefire Oscar contender, and the campaign for Jordan as a Best Actor hopeful is already underway.
Brie Larson, Rob Morgan, Tim Blake Nelson, Rafe Spall, and O'Shea Jackson also star. The script was co-penned by Cretton with Andrew Lanham and is, as previously mentioned, based on Stevenson's Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. Catch the movie in theaters Dec. 25 and/or at the Toronto International Film Festival this Friday.
