Regardless of how one feels about the nature of awards and related ceremony in general, it's hard not to root for incredibly good shit when it's up for a big prize. And there's surely plenty here to root for among the 2019 Emmys nominations, even for the most hardened of awards-trashing cynics.

Not to mention, Game of Thrones has emerged with a whopping 32 nods, marking the most for a drama in a single year. Additionally, this marks the first time that four actresses from a single drama series have landed in the supporting category together.

Beyoncé’s concert film Homecoming recieved six nominations in categories like Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded), Outstanding Music Direction, Outstanding Directing, and Outstanding Writing. The Netflix project gave a behind-the-scenes look at Beys historic 2018 Coachella performance. The singer would share four out of the six potential wins.

A latecomer topic in this year's awards chatter, of course, has been the surprise mainstream success of the HBO x Sky Atlantic collab Chernobyl. As a testament to the show's ability to permeate the current pop culture landscape, look no further than the fact that fans of the show actually had to be warned against taking nuclear disaster selfies.

That unfortunate byproduct aside, it's nice to see Jared Harris and company among the 2019 contenders. Game of Thrones, Veep, Barry, True Detective, and When They See Us also made welcomed appearances across this year's categories.

Another notable nomination went to Billy Porter for his role in the FX series Pose. The 49-year-old has become the first openly gay black man to secure a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.

"I just haven’t been breathing for the past day," Porter told Deadlineabout his anticipation for the 2019 Emmy nominations. "So today, I was able to breathe—that was my first reaction!"

If you're wondering why Stranger Things was totally excluded from the nominations, there's a perfectly logical explanation. The cut-off date for Emmy eligibility was May 31, 2019, and the third season of Netflix's hit show didn't debut until July 4. It looks like the Hawkins crew will have to wait until next year for their chance at major hardware.
