Award-winning actress Peggy Lipton has died at the age of 72, the L.A Timesreported Saturday.

Lipton rose to fame for her starring role as officer Julie Barnes on the hit television show The Mod Squad. Her portrayal of Barnes earned her multiple Golden Globe nominations and one win for Best TV Actress in a drama. She also played Norma Jennings in the cult-classic series Twin Peaks.

Along with her own prominent career, Lipton was married to iconic music producer Quincy Jones from 1974 to 1990. This relationship bore the couple two children who are stars in their own right. Kidada Jones is a star model known and was the girlfriend of Tupac Shakur at the time of his death. Her sister, Rashida Jones, is a director and actress who had recurring roles on The Office and Parks and Recreation. They released a joint statement shortly after Lipton's death.

According to Kidada and Rashida Jones, Lipton "made her journey peacefully with her daughters and nieces by her side." It goes on to say that Lipton lost her long-standing battle with cancer, which first made headlines in 2004.

"Peggy was, and will always be our beacon of light, both in this world and beyond," the family's statement reads. "She will always be a part of us."
