Netflix has announced that Marvel’s The Punisher and Jessica Jones will be canceled, just a month after the debut of The Punisher’s second season.

The two shows were the only remaining series from Marvel left on Netflix. According to Deadline there won’t be any new Punisher episodes, but Jessica Jones Season 3 will still run before being canceled.

This is the end of the relationship between Marvel and Netflix, which began in 2013 with the news of four series and The Defenders limited series. The Punisher was a bonus sixth show that got added after the fact.

Netflix said in a statement, “We are grateful to Marvel for five years of our fruitful partnership and thank the passionate fans who have followed these series from the beginning.”

On Instagram, Krysten Ritter posted a photo from Jones' recent final table read. "It has been a dream to play Jessica alongside my amazing cast and the best crew in the business for these past 5 years. I am so grateful for every second of it. We have THE BEST fans," she wrote, teasing that she's "proud of how we complete JJ’s journey":

Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb wrote a thankful open letter to fans that contained a curious moment seemingly laying the blame on Netflix. "Our Network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters…but you know Marvel better than that.”

Loeb's letter commended the never-before-seen nature of the collaboration, citing its "four separate television series, each with different super-talented showrunners, writers, directors, cast and crew, coming out months apart," all building to The Defenders. He went on to add, "We loved each and every minute of it. And we did it all for you—the fans—who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it."

In 2018, Netflix canceled Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Daredevil one after the other. But there’s still good news ahead, as Marvel content will soon become a major part of the upcoming Disney+ streaming service. Additionally, Marvel TV recently signed a deal with Hulu for one special and four animated series for adults.
