Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have dropped the trailer for the upcoming psychological horror film Ma starring Octavia Spencer. Directed by Tate Taylor of The Help, Ma explores the sinister decline of a lonely woman living in a small Ohio town.
Thr trailer begins when Sue Ann, played by Spencer, is approached by a teenage girl who asks if she will buy her and her friends some alcohol. Sue Ann, who's eager to make new friends, suggests that instead of drinking and driving, the high school students come to her house and drink in the basement. After the teens ease their initial worry, they decide to take Sue Ann up on her offer, soon starting to rely on her home as a recreational destination.
Once it becomes clear Sue Ann's hospitality has descended into an obsession, the kids realize they're in over their heads.
Taylor, who directed Spencer in her Oscar-winning role in The Help, co-wrote the film alongside Scotty Landes of Who Is America? and Workaholics. The cast also includes Juliette Lewis, Diana Silvers, Luke Evans, McKaley Miller, Missi Pyle, Corey Fogelmanis, Gianni Paolo, and Dante Brown.
Blumhouse has become one of the trailblazers in the horror genre, responsible for commercial hits Insidious and The Purge, in addition to critically-acclaimed films such as Jordan Peele's Get Out and M. Night Shyamalan's Split.
Ma is slated for a May, 31 2019 release. Spencer is also now in talks to join Anna Hathaway in Robert Zemeckis’ remake of Roald Dahl's The Witches.
