Following the fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice at the hands of a Cleveland police officer in November, the city wants an outside party to handle the investigation.

Video of the Nov. 22 shootings shows Officer Tim Loehmann shooting Rice two seconds after his police cruiser pulled up to him. Police were responding to a 911 call about someone with a gun at Cudell Recreation Center in Cleveland. That gun turned out to be a toy.

The Associated Press reports that Cleveland's Safety Director and ex-police chief Michael McGrath has discussed the matter with officials in Cuyahoga County. City Spokesman Dan Ball noted that Cleveland would like an outside party to handle all future uses of deadly force by police, as well.

According to the Associated Press, whoever ends up conducting the investigation will forward their findings to the Cuyahoga County District Attorney's Office. Rice's death has been ruled a homicide, and a grand jury will be presented with the evidence to decide whether or not charges should be filed.

In the interim, Cleveland police will continue to investigate.
