Though it may not be the most shocking unannounced addition to the Coachella bill, Solange‘s appearance on stage with The xx can easily be counted among the most pleasant surprises from weekend one of the festival. Roughly a third of the way through their nearly hour-long set, the group brought out the younger Knowles sister, who sang a bit of “Locked in Closets” (from her True EP) before diving into a typically echoey, gorgeous duet with xx frontman Oliver Sim on Aaliyah‘s “Hot Like Fire”– a nod to the modern R&B roots that lurk ever beneath the surface of the band’s stripped down sound.
