XXXTentacion was left out of the Grammys' In Memoriam segment Sunday night due to his "history of domestic violence,"Â according to a source close to the awards show production.
That's the reason given in a report on the omission from Variety, who added that X's reps made multiple requests for the artist—who was fatally shot outside a motorcycle dealership in Deerfield Beach last June—to be included in the televised segment alongside Mac Miller and others. Scott Hutchison and Richard Swift were also not featured during the ceremony.
Back in December, Academy boss Neil Portnow called the process of selecting In Memoriam honorees a "daunting task" that inevitably only scratches the surface of the vast array of talent lost each year.Â
"We track those that we lose in our industry in any given year and then we have a process by which we go through it," Portnow, whose final broadcast as Recording Academy president was this weekend's ceremony, told Rolling Stoneat the time. "Our on-air in memoriam—we're lucky if we wind up [featuring] 10 to 15 percent of those we lose. Because it's always hard choices. All of that is to say, I don't have any answers for you now, but obviously artists who were prominent and well-known by the public are people who are recognized and we'll just wind up having to see how it plays out."
In October, recordings surfaced in which X is heard discussing assaulting a former girlfriend and other violent crimes.
X's name, however, is included in an extended In Memoriam list on the official Grammys site.
