The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon boasts Grammy Award-winners The Roots as its in-house band, and the collective has shared the stage with President Barack Obama, Morrissey, Drake, and a host of others. During a recent appearance on the show, Big Sean didn’t opt to perform tracks from his upcoming album I Decided. In fact, the Detroit MC didn’t perform any music at all, but he did shed some light on the album’s artwork.

“This is me, and this is an older version of me,” Sean explained, motioning toward the dual images of himself featured on the cover of I Decided. “The story of the album is: imagine you went through life and you made all the wrong decisions your whole life. You get to the end of your life and your at a moment where it’s like, ‘God, I did everything wrong. I didn’t work it out with the love of my life. I messed it up with my parents. I’m not doing the job I was sent here to do.’”

Sean further added that the Sliding Doors concept is about having the wisdom of an old man while still being young and able to make decisions in the moment. So while Sean’s musical performance will presumably take place on his Saturday Night Live debut this weekend, he did give fans some insight into his thought process for the album.

The interview also contains tidbits about Sean’s first visit to the NBC studios with Kanye West and initially performing with The Roots in 2011. Big Sean’s I Decided is scheduled for a Feb. 3 release.
