Big Daddy Kane has taken to social media to offer a “sincere apology” for what he says was a misunderstanding during a concert in Virginia.
Video circulated online after Kane’s performance on Jan. 14 that showed the Juice Crew icon pushing an ASL interpreter to the side of the stage as he was performing his job. Kane said what the video didn’t show was that he soon after apologized to the interpreter, whose name is Billy Sanders. “So I know a lot of people out there saw this…but see what y’all didn’t see was this,” he said in a video on Instagram as he played another clip of him dapping up Sanders and apologizing for the miscommunication. “I’ve done a lot of crazy stuff in my life. But I would never try to disrespect an interpreter that’s doing sign language for the deaf community onstage.”
Kane said he thought Sanders was just an eager fan and that no one told him an interpreter would be sharing the stage with him. “No one told me what was going on. No one told my manager that there was going to be an interpreter. We were clueless, so when I came on stage and saw someone just mouthing the lyrics, I was trying to get them off the stage.”
He continued by saying that “no one showed the clip of me apologizing to the brother and allowing him to stay onstage and finish the show. No one showed the clip of me apologizing to the crowd. Because as I said on the clip, I want everyone to enjoy the show, and that means even those that can’t hear it.”
His caption also noted, “Billy Sanders my sincere apology Bro.”
Big Daddy Kane is expected to perform next at the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association tournament in Baltimore in February. He will join the stage alongside other hip-hop legends such as DJ Jazzy Jeff, Rakim, DJ Kool, and more.
