In an interview with Complex last month, Fifth Harmony's Lauren Jauregui remarked that when Donald Trump's presidential campaign was just getting underway, she had an epiphany, of sorts. "I have a few million followers…if I’ve got all these young people watching me and caring about what I have to say, I should say something important, because I’m so passionate about it—I’ve been writing about it since I was like 10," she said. "I thought, why not just say it out loud and have people read it and maybe learn something."
When reports surfaced of Trump's decision to end The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, Jauregui couldn't just stay quiet. As the child of two parents who immigrated from Cuba to the U.S., Jauregui once again used her voice and platform to criticize The Donald for trying to undo yet another policy put forth by his predecessor, just a week after his controversial pardoning of Arizona sheriff Joe Arpaio.
"It’s incredible to me that you’ll pardon a man who is known for running his prison as a Latino concentration camp and call him a patriot, but then deport kids with a dream to be successful citizens with safe lives," Jauregui wrote on Twitter. "You disgust me. You and your squad of Republican elite/cowards are truly sick humans. Pardoning criminals and criminalizing the vulnerable."
DACA was a policy put in place by the Obama administration in 2012 that allowed for undocumented immigrants who came into the United States as children, or "Dreamers," to receive a renewable two-year permit which gave them the peace of mind of knowing that they would not be deported. These Dreamers were also granted the opportunity through the program to enroll in college, and legally get a job.
When asked if "Dreamers" should be worried about his impending decision on Friday, Trump responded, "We love the Dreamers. We love everybody." But, as we all know with this president, it's best to take whatever he says leading up to a decision with a grain of salt. The White House said an announcement on the future of the program will be made on Tuesday.
