SHELLS

Singer-songwriter SHELLS rounded out 2016 with the release of her debut EP, Shapes, but it wasn't the only landmark that year, obviously. As we all know, that summer saw the UK leave the European Union and the wake of that fateful night, she also wrote this new song "Like I Love You", which she's finally releasing today. Written with producer Starsmith, "Like I Love You" was formulated in response to Brexit and the deep divides its ripped open in the country. It preaches a message of unity and understanding, encouraging the listener to remember what it is that makes us human.

Speaking with Complex via email, SHELLS told us: "Starsmith and I wrote 'Like I Love You' in June 2016; the UK had just voted to leave the EU. 'Like I Love You' is a reaction to this. It's about a belief in unity, through our capacity to love. 'If you love at all, then you love me, like I love you.' I had written these lyrics on the way to the session, and it seemed an important message at a time when our nation felt divided as to how our future should look. Starsmith started to play these beautiful chords on an upright piano in his studio, and the song came together quickly."

"Like I Love You" drops September 25 and is set to appear on SHELLS' upcoming EP, Colours.
