Rapper, producer, singer, Piers James is about as versatile as they come. His music pulls influence from jazz, soul, rap, grime, dancehall, and more, and on his latest— “Disney S**t And War”—he puts a lot of that on display, starting with a high-intensity rap warcry, before sidestepping into a soulful, Gospel-tinged meditation on the Black British experience.
The self-produced new single is lifted from his most recent project, Voyage To Reverie, which also dropped today. Closing out the project, the new cut seeks to upend the narrative of what a Black creative should be and champions the struggle to remain independent—themes that define much of the project as a whole.
The new track comes with an equally potent visual. Directed by Piers himself, the video takes just as many twists and turns, from 16mm film to animation, all rendered in dramatic monochrome.
Speaking in more detail, Piers explains: “The film shot on 16mm goes through different mediums that showcase the struggles of an artist within the industry as a Black warrior and the fight they must have for independence, as well as the influences this industry and culture can have on children depicted by what’s glorified. This includes animations around Black communities and how they were promoted with the stereotypical characteristics within Black men and women.”
