Fresh off the back of a series of collaborations with alt-rap up-and-comers Sainte, Feux and 5EB, North London producer, musician and rapper J P Rose is now focused firmly on his own creations. Next up on the horizon is his nine-track mixtape, Lo-Soul (due for release Spring 2022), a carefully curated project he produced entirely himself.

The first track out of the bag is one of the few solo cuts on there, the appropriately named “Control”. A hazy, laid-back blend of soul-soaked hip-hop, Rose describes it as “a song about staying focused and in control of one’s destiny, and being able to give props to yourself along the way.”

Hot on the heels of the track’s official release at midnight last night, we’ve now got the official visuals, directed by Tansy Taylor with Rose acting as creative director. It’s a fitting accompaniment, equal parts stylish and relaxed with shots of Rose and the boys “suited and booted”, as he puts it, as they cruise around town, looking for a motive without a single care in the world.

Elsewhere on the tape, you can expect collaborations with Feux, rapper, illustrator and designer Kieron Boothe, Kumo Collective rapper AVC, Brighton-based Dutch soul singer Kymara, and Rag’n’Bone Man’s backing vocalist, R&B singer Sylvia Mwenze, to name a few.

Hit play on the video at the top and then make sure you add “Control” to all your playlists.
