Mixtape Madness and adidas are back with the latest season of #BeatTheClock to coincide with the new line of adidas ZX. The weekly, producer-focused show is once again hosted by Walkz, aka the Drill Simon Cowell himself, who puts a different maestro under pressure to see if they can crank out a new hit in 15 minutes or less.
Last season, Walkz put four of UK drill’s most influential architects—M1OnTheBeat, Ghosty, Bkay and Gotcha—to the test. Each producer was given three samples to choose from and then just 10 minutes to make a beat. This year, they’ve expanded the time a little and looked beyond the confines of drill into different genres.
For S3, Walkz relocated to the iconic Abbey Road Studios (with the final episode shot in Metropolis Studios) to put another four producers through their paces. Squaring up to the challenge this time around are the genre-hopping master of rap, pop, Afrobeats and beyond, Nyge, multi-genre new-gen talent CeeBeats, “Wooo Riddim” legend S-X, and Afroswing auteur JAE5.
Although they have five extra minutes to work with, the judging criteria remain the same: 1) difficulty using the sample, 2) creativity, 3) time taken, and 4) the way it sounds. Also running alongside that is the TikTok challenge where aspiring freestylers are being encouraged to jump on the producers’ beats and share them using the #BeatTheClock and #adidasZX hashtags. You can watch all four episodes below.
The new season of #BeatTheClock was created by Mixtape Madness in partnership with adidas to honour the latest releases of the ZX franchise. Check them out here: adidas.co.uk/zx.
