Old friends and collaborators Lil Silva and Sampha have reunited in the studio and the results are really something special.

Marrying Sampha’s knack for tugging at the heartstrings with Lil Silva’s flair for rousing percussion, new track “Backwards” is the perfect dancefloor tearjerker. The two have been close creative allies for over a decade now, stretching back to tracks like “Salient” and “On Your Own”, collaborating more recently on the production for Chip’s “Darth Vader” and serpentwithfeet’s “Fellowship”.

That long relationship has only made their work together more instinctual and it gives tracks like “Backwards” a magic that could only come from two friends who’ve known each other for years and years.

Fenn O’Meally handles the visuals for this one, taking us on twists and turns through a dimly-lit, monochrome house while Sampha’s “Sinkhole, blackhole, control me” spirals downwards in step with the driving rhythms.

It’s unclear if this is just a one-off or a hint of something more substantial on the way, but either way, it’s an ever-welcome treat to have this pair on wax again. Peep visuals above and be sure to add “Backwards” to your playlists.
