For the past few years, it’s been getting harder and harder to categorise D Double E’s music.
Grime is still an influence, sure, but his horizons are much broader these days, and that’s never been more true than on his new EP, No Reign, No Flowers. The 7-track project was produced by TenBillion Dreams, whose name you’ll recognise from Ghetts’ 2021 album, Conflict Of Interest, another artistic leap forward from one of grime’s most adventurous creators.
The first half of the EP is all D Double, but from the fourth track onwards, he brings in some friends. Casting the net as about as far and wide as its possible to go, he brings in fellow grime OG Ghetts, UK soul singer Hamzaa, road rap don Suspect OTB, and Detroit rap maverick Danny Brown.
Despite all that, No Reign, No Flowers is a cohesive release and hopefully not the last time D Double and TenBillion Dreams work together. Listen in full below.
