Best New Music This Week

This was a somewhat slow week for new music, but there are still some great releases worth listening to as you head into the weekend. Benny the Butcher just released a song from what he is calling the “most anticipated album of the year,” called “Timeless,” a new collaboration with Lil Wayne and Big Sean. Reason, JID, and Isaiah Rashad connected on their mellow hit “Extinct.” And Anderson .Paak joined forces with Timbaland for the funky club banger “Jewelz.” This week’s roundup also includes songs from Headie One, SAINt JHN, and Lil Loaded.

Benny the Butcher is back with an explosive new collaboration. “Timeless” leaked earlier this week, but it did not include the final verse from Big Sean. Together, Benny, Lil Wayne, and Big Sean display a natural chemistry. Benny is assertive while rapping over a triumphant Hit-Boy beat, Lil Wayne sounds sharper than ever, and Big Sean shows control with reflective bars. “Timeless” will appear on Benny the Butcher’s Burden of Proof, which he claims is the “most anticipated album of the year.”

Reason f/ JID & Isaiah Rashad, “Extinct”

“Extinct” is a mellow and slow-building record that unites Reason with JID and fellow TDE artist Isaiah Rashad. On the track, the trio compare themselves to other people in the industry, repeating on each verse, “Damn, they don’t make ’em like this anymore.” Reason also adds, “I’m a competitor/ Levelin’, young veteran, more lines than editors/ Shit, why you think we Top Dawgs? Niggas different.” “Extinct” is a standout on Reason’s new album New Beginnings

Anderson .Paak & Timbaland, “Jewelz”

“Jewelz” is another funky record from Anderson .Paak, in which he slides over Timbaland’s retro production. The fast tempo is similar to what we’ve heard from .Paak in the past, but on “Jewelz,” he uses a high-pitched, squeaky voice to brag about his new drip. “I ain’t even put my jewels on/I ain’t even play my latest greatest song,” he sings on the chorus. “Timeless” is an upbeat record guaranteed to get people out of their seats.

Headie One f/ Young T & Bugsey, “Princess Cuts’

“Princess Cuts” is a sultry record from Headie One that would sound amazing at a tropical resort somewhere. On the track, the British rapper, along with hip-hop duo Young T and Bugsey, sing about gifting their love interests expensive diamond gifts. “Got twenty on my wrist, I’m going crazy/Canary princess cuts for my baby,” Young T sings. Elsewhere on the track, Headie One and Bugsey brag about their other designer possessions. “Princess Cuts” is a standout dance record from Headie’s latest project, EDNA

SAINt JHN, “Gorgeous”

After the breakout success of his “Roses” remix, SAINt JHN returns with “Gorgeous,” an uptempo track with a heavy trap-influenced bass. While the title may suggest that SAINt JHN is addressing a love interest, he’s actually dropping braggadocious lines about the things he can afford, thanks to his luxurious lifestyle. “Everything I got up on my wrist, shit is gorgeous/Everything I got up on my teeth, shit is gorgeous/And they know I’m comin’ from the east, shit is hardest,” he spits. “Gorgeous” is expected to appear on SAINt JHN’s forthcoming album.

Lil Loaded f/ Polo G, “While I’m Here”

Lil Loaded and Polo G teamed up for “While I’m Here” a sentimental track that encourages fans to appreciate and cherish rising stars while they’re still alive. “Show love while I’m here, don’t wait until I’m dead,” Lil Loaded sings on the chorus. Later on the track, Polo G discusses what it’s like growing up in Chicago, rapping about the deaths he’s witnessed, struggles with substance abuse, and other “demons.” “While I’m Here” is a gripping collaboration that appears on Lil Loaded new album, A Demon in 6lue.
