Toronto rapper and OVO Sound artist Baka Not Nice explained how he got his name in a recent interview.

Although he’s typically a pretty nice guy—he almost went as far to agree that he’s quite pleasant—he told MuchMusic that he becomes “not nice” when someone comes at his boss, Drake. Before being signed as an artist, Baka Not Nice was hired as part of Drake’s security detail.

“This for the most part is who I am. The ‘not nice’ is, like you hear me talk about it, like for instance, if you go at Drake, you’re going to see ‘not nice,’ he explained.

“I’m not going to be nice with you if you’re going at my boss. Why am I going to be nice? You know what I mean?”

He elaborated that he’s mostly nice with everyone else, especially women. It should be noted in 2015, he was sentenced to six months in jail for assaulting a woman during a domestic dispute.

“The ‘not nice’ doesn’t include the women. The ‘not nice’ is for the bad guys. That’s what the ‘not nice’ is.”

The host suggested that the name is reserved for men, but Baka specified that it’s only for the “bad guys.”

Last week, Baka Not Nice returned with new track “Took A Trip.” The track was likely inspired by trips with his boss to Turks and Caicos.
