Brockhampton had previously announced albums called Team Effort and Puppy, but they put all projects on hold when original member Ameer Vann was accused by multiple women of being "emotionally manipulative and mentally abusive." Vann was kicked out of the group in May as the remaining members of Brockhampton told fans, "We do not tolerate abuse of any kind. This not a solution to their suffering, but we hope this is a step in the right direction. We are going to cancel the remaining dates of our current US tour to go home and regroup."

In June, the group returned with a new song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and announced an album called The Best Years of Our Livesbut it seems that project has been replaced by Iridescence.

Speaking on the album's creation, Abstract tweeted, "I don’t know if I would have been able to write another record if we didn’t come to europe - thanks for all the positive love man it was surreal this year has been one long ass dream. iridescence."
