Adele’s “Hello” video dropped on Friday, and her fans are excited to hear that she’s back with a new single. So excited they fawned over Tristan Wilds (of The Wired fame)' appearance. Then there was the flip phone that caused pandemonium on Twitter, sparking a ton of jokes and memes.
“Hello” is directed by filmmaker Xavier Dolan, and he recently gave an interview with the Los Angeles Times to respond what was happening online. As we expected, he didn’t intend his use of a flip phone to be funny.
"It drives me crazy," he said. "I could see the GIFs on Twitter. I'm like, 'guys, get over it. It doesn't matter.' But the real explanation is that I never like filming modern phones or cars. They're so implanted in our lives that when you see them in movies you're reminded you're in reality."
He added, "If you see an iPhone or a Toyota in a movie, they're anti-narrative, they take you out of the story. If I put an iPhone or a modern car in a movie it feels like I'm making a commercial."
There you have it. Maybe the jokes will stop now … or not.
