Complex Sessions 072: Jerome Six

After a triumphant Ibiza debut and a series of well-received early productions of his own, we caught up with the Enfield-born, Essex-based house DJ for an exclusive mix of deep cuts from his record bag.

As owner and founder of RISE London, Enfield-born, Essex-based Jerome Six has spent the bulk of his career championing the more intense, energetic end of the tech-house spectrum. It’s that tried and true approach of hard work and persistence that’s earned him a busy live schedule, and over the past 12 months, he’s seen the hard graft really pay off. Late last year, he made his debut at Hï Ibiza when he went back-to-back with East London selector Shenin Amara in the famed Wild Corner and this year’s shaping up to be even bigger

Jerome kicked off 2023 by releasing the first of his own productions, starting with his debut single, “Chains”. It’s been a steady flow of new releases ever since, pretty much one a month, including a timely tech-house revamp of Blay Vision’s viral “Cammy Riddim” and his debut EP, Every Single Time, just last month. The latter, he tells us in the Q&A below, was a particularly proud moment for him, with both original tracks clocked up some pretty impressive streaming figures and even chart positions on Beatport.

We caught up with Jerome Six for an exclusive Complex Sessions mix and to talk more about his come-up. Press play on that below, and read more on the flip.

Tell us a bit about your selections in this mix.

I’ve been on quite a journey this year with my music and my sound, so I really wanted to showcase the pool of music I’m working with at the moment. Playing regular gigs and local venues, sometimes you can play it a bit safe and give the crowd the basics so I really wanted to open up on this and shine a light on my new stuff.

What was the one track you absolutely had to include?

I’m gonna go for two of my own from my debut release on Resonance Records: “Every Single Time” and “Nobody”, both of which landed in the Top 30 on Beatport. That was a very proud moment for me so they had to be in.

Any tracks that narrowly missed the cut?

Max Chapman’s remix of “Every Single Time”, but it was either I put his one in or mine [laughs]. Other than that, I’ve got loads of unreleased projects but I thought I’d mix it up with other producers.

What’s the first single or album you ever bought?

This is gonna sound crazy but I actually never brought any until I started collecting house music in 2009. The reason being, my dad [LG Lewis] was quite a well known DJ in his scene, so he was signed up to every single promo list you could think of and we used to get vinyls, CDs and cassettes all for free. So everything from reggae to grime, I used to love it.

What’s the last physical record you bought?

Again, I’m fortunate I had my dad but I think, in the near future, I’m gonna start a little collection as a lot of producers are now doing vinyl-only releases and I’m all about my exclusive beats.

What do you want to see happen musically over the next 12 months?

There’s been a small influx of new venues popping up over the last couple of years so, hopefully, we can see some more, especially after the loss of Tobacco Dock and Printworks.

What trend or scene absolutely needs to die right now?

How long do we have? [Laughs] Venue snobbery and raving snobbery, people who go to raves and film other people dancing then put it online, does my head in! Everyone should feel comfortable going out and enjoying themselves without being watched, judged or filmed. So yeah, that—and those terrible AI remixes!
