When Conway the Machine signed with Griselda, he didn’t give his paperwork a thorough read.

He admitted as much in a new interview with The Breakfast Club, saying around the 40:28 mark, “When we did that shit in the beginning, I really wasn’t all the way… I’mma keep it a buck. I didn’t even read that contract, bro. I didn’t read that shit—I just signed that shit and moved on. Unfortunately, the contract wasn’t in my favor. So now, going forward, it’s time to redo all that. I gotta make sure it’s in my favor now.”

He continued, saying he still will “wave the Griselda flag regardless because… I was hands-on with that. Me and [Westside Gunn]. We can figure something out, which I’m sure we will.”

When asked by Charlamagne tha God if he was persuaded to sign the contract without a lawyer because of money, Conway said, “I didn’t get no money,” describing what he got as “some pocket change” for his three contracts with Shady Records, Interscope, and Griselda.

Charlamagne followed up, asking, “Everybody ate but you?” to which Conway said, “Pretty much.”

When Angela Yee asked how Conway can “trust people” after experiencing what he did, Conway said that he “don’t.”

He continued by saying that he doesn’t even trust Westside Gunn: “I don’t trust nobody no more. I trust that it’ll be all business. That’s what I trust. I trust me… I tried it the other way and got nothing out of it.”

Despite it all, Conway said that it “was all love.”

In an interview with the Bootleg Kev Podcast from February, Conway said that he was “contractually” finished with Griselda and Shady Records.

“I’m contractually done now,” Conway said at the time. “Sitting right here right now, I’m not on a contract with Griselda, Shady none of that shit no more. It’s free agency right now you heard. I need that supermax man, I need that Giannis bag.”

On Feb. 24, the Griselda member released his much-anticipated Shady debut, God Don’t Make Mistakes. The Buffalo native’s 12-track tape includes features from Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Benny the Butcher, Westside Gunn, T.I., and Jill Scott, among others—and production from The Alchemist, Daringer, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, and Hit-Boy, and more.

“Just being able to create and get mentorship from Eminem… that’s one of my favorite artists of all time,” Conway told Zane Lowe at the time of the project’s release. “Sometimes it can be a lot of pressure when you sign to a major label. It was important to me to still be able to feed my diehard fans and my core audience but still show some sort of growth.”
