In his first verse of 2022, J. Cole wasted no time reminding the rap game where he sits in hip-hopās pecking order.
During a scene-stealing guest spot on Benny the Butcherās new single āJohnny Pās Caddy,ā Cole declaredĀ himself the best rapper alive: āOn God, the best rapper alive/Headshot, now go and ask the best rappers that died/They tell you he never lied,ā he raps on the track.
As soon as Coleās declaration started circulating on social media, Ibrahaim āIbā Hamad, the North Carolina rapperāsĀ manager and Dreamville co-founder, took to Twitter to come to his defense. āI see no lies,ā he wrote.
Granted, it isnāt the first time Cole has crowned himself the best rapper alive.Ā As far back as 2014, he made sure to remindĀ peers where he ranked among the all-time greats.Ā
On āFire Squad,ā a standout track from his 2014 album 2014 Forest Hills Drive, Cole raps, āAināt aĀ way around it no more, I am the greatest.ā In addition, he declares himself the ābest n***a outā on āG.O.M.D.,ā rapping, āFuck the rest, Iām the best n***a out/When Iām back home, Iām the best in the South/When Iām in L.A., Iām the best in the West.āĀ
Most recently, ColeĀ reiterated this belief on his 2019 single āMiddle Child,ā where he raps, āI studied the greats, Iām the greatest right now.ā
