Earlier this month, Goonew’s family landed themselves in hot water for celebrating the late rapper’s life by propping up his corpse at a nightclub in Washington D.C.

In a recent interview with TMZ, Desiigner defended the Maryland rapper’s family’s decision to display his body in such a manner, saying that their unorthodox approach to celebrating Goonew’s life added “new flavor to the game.”

“The haters gonna hate but if that’s what he wanted, and his family felt that was the right energy for him, let him and his family celebrate it,” Desiigner said. “If he wanted to go out like that, that’s a beautiful way to go out.”

The Brooklyn rapper went on to say that the majority of funerals are now “old fashioned anyway,” before praising Goonew’s family for adding “new flavor to the game.”

When asked how he would want his life celebrated after he passes on, Desiigner admitted that he might prefer Goonew’s approach. “I would definitely like a moment like that,” he said. “For sure. I would definitely like some vibe like that.”

Days after footage surfaced showing Goonew’s body propped upright at a club gathering, the 24-year-old rapper’s family addressed the controversy surrounding his “final show.”

“For all the negatives, people probably don’t even know nothing about us,” his mother, Patrice Morrow, said. “They have no idea. People just saying what they want to say and that’s fine. That’s perfectly fine. I’m pleased with how I sent my son away. I wish people would just let me grieve in peace.”

Goonew’s sister added, “We don’t care about anybody and what ya’ll have to say negative. Nobody. We don’t care. They’re like, I know his mama wouldn’t approve of that. Yeah, she did, she was on stage with us.”
