Cordae Brings Out Mom to Sing During 'Tiny Desk' Performance of Song That Samples Her Music

His track "06 Dreamin" samples a song she made when she was an aspiring musician.

During his appearance on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series, Cordae invited his mother Jennifer Dunston to perform "06 Dreamin," which samples a song she made as an aspiring musician in 2006.

"This next song is called '06 Dreamin,' it's really special to my heart," he said following the performance of the opening track of the Tiny Desk Concert set, seen in the video above.

"It's a story of irony, it's a story about my mom," Cordae explained. "A true story of how she was an aspiring singer and she just never got her big break to make it. Ironically enough ... she's living that dream through me because I'm here with y'all. I ended up sampling one of her old songs to make this song. But like I said, we back home, man. I don't got to use the sample, we got the real thing here today."

He then invited his mother to come up and help out with the track, who delivered a live performance of the sample that appeared on the studio version of the track.

"Can y'all make some noise for my Mama one time?" Cordae said after the song was finished. "Thank you, Mom, for blessing me. Appreciate you, Mom, the invoice is on the way. Don't worry about it, OK? I got it."

Other tracks Cordae performed for Tiny Desk included "Saturday Mornings," "C Carter," "Have Mercy," "Nothings Promised," and "RNP." Check out the full performance above.
