Beyoncé’s dance-driven new record Renaissance arrived on streaming services last night, and it features a number of notable samples in its varied production.

The list of songwriters and producers involved in the record, her first solo effort since 2016’s Lemonade, is extensive. But some of the names showed up in the album’s credits because of a sample, or a sly interpolation of lyrics or melodies. Ten of the album’s 16 tracks feature one or multiple prominent samples, from club classics and vintage Memphis rap, to Donna Summer and Kelis.

The record spans an array of sounds, which is further helped by the variety of producers on board. Frequent collaborators Mike Dean and The-Dream provide production on the record, but so does Skrillex, Honey Dijon, and PC Music producer A.G. Cook. Running just over an hour, it also features writing credits from her husband Jay-Z, Sabrina Claudio, and Drake.

One particular point of contention on the record, however, is the inclusion of a sample of a Kelis track. In a series of comments shared on Instagram surrounding the release of Renaissance, Kelis said that Bey did not clear or approve the sample of “Milkshake” that shows up on “Energy.” The original song was produced by the Neptunes, who are also credited as the songwriters, so it’s unclear if Bey and her team were legally obligated to clear the sample with her first.
