Artists and musicians across the country are continuing to impress, as a plethora of fresh new music graced streaming platforms in April. Alternative hip-hop and R&B soundscapes dominated the release roster last month, many of which were coupled with traditional rap flows from some of the nation’s best emerging MCs. Collaborations also came in abundance last month, and we saw a handful of artists explore sounds that went beyond the confines of their usual genres. With Australia’s hip-hop and R&B scene continuing to overflow with talent, we present to you our favourite drops from April.

The pair recently teamed up with Subnet and Outlaw The Artist on their latest single “Slow You Down”. The song features a laid-back beat that smoothly combines classic R&B with drum and bass sounds, creating a unique listen. Jordan Dennis and Outlaw The Artist’s vocals effortlessly complement one another on this track that flirts with the themes of love and lust. Melbourne-raised Chilean artist Jalmar is well-known for front running Latin-trap infused music in Australia. His latest single “El Window Seat” is a vibrant, up-tempo track that features both English and Spanish lyrics. This single is meant for moving and offers a fun, experimental and effortless listen. The production of the track is a standout, blending different subgenres and sounds to create a catchy, addictive beat. With that being said, it’s Jalmar’s confident and complex lyrical cadence that adds the energy to the single. Although this is his first release of 2023, we anticipate a huge rest of the year for Jalmar and look forward to hearing more of his dynamic sound.
