2019 has proven to be a huge year for Lizzo, as she managed to break into the mainstream with a number of hit singles, big-name collaborations, and a critically acclaimed album. But her rise in the industry wasn't exactly easy. In fact, the 31-year-old singer admits she once considered abandoning music because her 2017 record "Truth Hurts" didn't initially take off.
"The day I released 'Truth Hurts' was probably one of the darkest days I've had ever in my career," she recently told People magazine. "I remember thinking, 'If I quit music now, nobody would notice. This is my best song ever, and nobody cares.'"
She continued: "I was like, 'Fuck it, I’m done.' And a lot of people rallied; my producer, my publicist and my family, they were like, 'Just keep going because this is the darkest before the dawn.'"
Thankfully, Lizzo took her team's advice.
Nearly two years after the release of "Truth Hurts," the track became a hit, reaching the No. 6 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 and going No. 1 on the Billboard Rhythmic chart. The song received a huge boost back in April, when it was featured on the Netflix film Someone Great starring Gina Rodriguez. "Truth Hurts," which appeared on the deluxe of version of 2019's Cuz I Love You, was eventually dubbed an anthem for female empowerment and went on to inspire the #DNATest challenge.
"Now the song that made me want to quit is the song that everyone’s falling in love with me for," she told People, "which is such a testament to journeys: Your darkest day turns into your brightest triumph."
