When discussing the project, the singer noted that he has poured everything into the American Teen follow-up. “This album is the culmination of all of the growth and experiences I have gathered over the past two remarkable years," Khalid explained. "I have been in the studio pouring my soul and spirit to create a body of work that I hope speaks to each and every one of you and I am excited to share 'Talk,' the first taste of that, today.”

Khalid initially gained recognition following the release of his first single "Location," which he dropped prior to his high school graduation. The song, which went 4x platinum, ultimately catapulted the singer to mainstream success, and the release of his 2017 album American Teen—earning him five Grammy nominations. Since his freshman project, Khalid has collaborated with artists across genres—from Billie Eilish to Ty Dolla Sign.

Khalid released his Suncity EP in October, a project the singer claims marks the beginning of a new era.
