When Rock spoke with Complex back in June, he was on the precipice of a pivotal moment in his career. Redemption, his excellent third album, garnered widespread acclaim upon release and ultimately resulted in that aforementioned Grammy win (a rare tie with Anderson .Paak's "Bubblin") for Best Rap Performance.
As Rock explained, the three years that passed between 90059 and Redemption helped him fall back in love with music. "For the past three years, I just stayed in the studio," he told Complex. "Sometimes I wasn't even going home. I was just staying in the studio til like five or six in the morning; go home and shower, then come right back. I told myself I gotta get back in it. And basically I just fell back in love with the music, and that’s what the people is hearing. I just wanted to do something different."
As for what's next, Rock very recently teased the possibility of a new full-length with fellow TDE family member Kendrick Lamar. Asked by a fan if he and Lamar would "ever record" such a project, Rock said simply they "might" have already done so.
