Things have been relatively quiet for R&B singer Sabrina Claudio after finding herself in the middle of some heated controversy. Now she returns with the single “Messages From Her,” a chill, slow-tempo track that showcases the intimate vocals that helped her skyrocket to popularity in 2016.

Claudio broke out thanks to the success of her Soundcloud EP Confidently Lost and its cuts like “Orion’s Belt.” Since then, she’s collaborated with the likes of 6lack and Khalid, joining the former on his 2017 Free 6lack Tour. She released her debut mixtape About Time in October of last year through Atlantic.

“Messages From Her” is Claudio’s third single off her forthcoming debut album No Flowers, No Rain, following “All to You” and the Khalid-assisted single “Don’t Let Me Down.” Per her people, Claudio says this track comes from “a moment of self–reflection to a happier time in my childhood where adulthood and every responsibility that is attached to it was nonexistent. Finding myself wishing I could speak to that little girl so she could give her perspective on what life and happiness are really about.”

Hopefully the singer has been doing a lot of self-reflecting, after facing huge backlash for some racist and problematic tweets from her past that surfaced earlier this year. She’s since apologized.

"I am deeply sorry for the insensitive words I've used," Claudio said in a tweeted statement back in April. "Some of the things you are seeing are true while others aren't. I realize my past ignorance is affecting people I care so much about and I am so sorry. I've made mistakes and while I cannot take them back, I will learn from them."

No Flowers, No Rain comes out on Aug. 15. Listen to “Messages From Her” above.
