“You have to be your own coach, you have to be your own hype man,” Jazz Cartier tells Complex, when it comes to making music. After months of teasing a new album—dropping several singles and videos along the way—the self-proclaimed "Prince of Toronto" released the highly anticipated Fleurever last week.
The 16-track project, featuring names like KTOE, Cuebeatz, WondaGurl, Lantz, Krinny, and DZL, represents his first since 2016’s Hotel Paranoia. But as Cartier reminds us in the video above, good things take time. The 25-year-old rapper admits to experiencing severe writer's block in the studio as he began working on Fleurever, but underscores the importance of “at least [making] something and not wasting the hours,” even when the creative juices aren't flowing. It took Jazz leaving his studio and settling into an Airbnb in High Park, near Toronto’s Lake Ontario, to find the inspiration that would allow Fleurever to really come to life.
Watch Chapter 2 of our “Run The Show” series above to hear more about the project and peep our full profile on Jazz Cartier, which also contains Chapter 1. Stay tuned for Chapter 3 dropping this Friday.
