During a performance for BET on Saturday, Meek Mill paused his set to address the death of XXXTentacion, the 20-year-old Florida rapper murdered on June 18.

“That was a good young n***a that lost his motherfucking life,” Meek told the audience. “If you come up from the motherfucking streets and the ghettos of America, and you black, you Spanish, where the system already trying to hunt us the fuck down, make sure you think about it before you kill a motherfucker that look just like you.”

“I wanna say rest in peace to that young n***a, [XXXTentacion],” Meek continued, before urging young men not to resort to gun violence over “petty shit.” “If you let any motherfucker from your neighborhood trick you out your motherfucking freedom about some petty shit, and your life ain’t on the line, he’s a motherfucking clown. This is the new age of black excellence.”

X, whose real name was Jahseh Onfroy, was killed on Monday during an apparent robbery. Onfroy's public memorial service takes place on Wednesday from 12 to 6 p.m. at the Florida Panther’s Stadium in Sunrise, Florida.

On June 18, the same day as X’s shooting, Meek attended a hearing to push for a new trial in his ongoing legal battle. The hearing resulted in no decision, a disappointment in Meek’s continued fight to have Judge Genece Brinkley removed from his case.
