Now, it would seem time is prime for Mahalia to emerge fully formed, and last month, she packaged that promise into "Sober", her brilliant debut single.
Wistful and expressive, the song shows a maturity and clarity in expression—well beyond her respective years—and now Mahalia's sharing a remix of the sombre track, courtesy of Dutch producer Jarreau Vandal. Adept at fusing influences from a range of genres, Vandal transforms "Sober" with funky bass licks and crisp drum kicks, inserting an urgency and a mid-tempo swing to proceedings.
