Listen to Charlotte Day Wilson’s “Work”

Because all good songs are named “Work.”

None

We live in a world where all good songs are named “Work.” Rihanna and Drake’s “Work” currently sits at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the eighth week in a row. A$AP Ferg’s “Work” remix still goes hard. “Work” by Ciara and Missy Elliott is the closest thing to sonic adrenaline in existence. Now, Charlotte Day Wilson has unveiled her own approach to the enterprising song title, with a track that was written long before Drake and Rihanna's reign atop the Hot 100.

Before premiering it via Zane Lowe’s Beats1 show, the Toronto singer/songwriter tweeted about any possible comparisons to a certain current chart topper: “The new track is called Work. Yes, I am aware Rihanna has a song called Work too. Get it out of ur systems now. Wrote it long before.”

As soon as the opening organ chords ring out, all other versions of “Work” fade from memory. Subtle guitar riffing and a steady, but spacious drum loop give Charlotte Day Wilson’s magnetic vocal plenty of room to breathe, as she tells a story concerned with commitment: “It's gonna take a bit of work. Oh, work. Now that you're here. Whoa, work. 'Cause people come and go. But I think you should know that I think this will work. It's gonna take a little time, but with you by my side, I won't let go 'til I've got what's mine.”
