While down in Austin, Texas for SXSW, Complex News caught up with Yo Gotti. The Memphis rapper has been on quite the run as of late with his new album, The Art of Hustle, hitting No. 1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts, and his single "Down in the DM" serving as the official anthem for all those sliding in the direct messages like M. Bison.
When asked what made this album different than his prior releases, Gotti explained, "I just think it's growth. I just think it's like just from one project to the next one. You're just seeing the growth within the records." He continued, "Me as a person, man, I'm just rapping reality. Every time I get in front of the microphone I'm just speaking about real life and what's happening."
He went on to state that his writing style was based off of the book The Art of War as well as his own history, and that he constructed it like a film to create a narrative. "To me the message is how the songs come together," Gotti said.
One of those songs is "Down in the DM," which not only topped the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop airplay charts at No. 1, but can be heard in club's everywhere encouraging you to dive into the DMs. So we asked Gotti what advice he has for all hopeful DMers. Check out the full interview above.
