Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck premiered at Sundance this weekend and offers an unflinching, emotionally draining look into the late musician's life. Officially authorized and produced by his daughter Francis Bean Cobain, the documentary features interviews with family members, ex girlfriend Tracy Marander, Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, and Courtney Love. But conspicuously absent is Dave Grohl

Director Brett Morgen said he interviewed Grohl earlier this month but that it was too late to include in the premiere. Still, he left open the possibility that Grohl's footage will appear in the film when it premieres to the general public on HBO.

"We had a locked print and trying to re-edit a film with a new interview in 10 days is kind of difficult," Morgen said at the premiere, according to Billboard. "This is the picture I wanted—I didn't want there to be a lot of people in the film. I hope we'll see a version [with the Grohl interview] some time."

The Rolling Stone was at the Sundance premiere and described the film as "an eight-years-in-the-making collective labor of love that offers a private peek into the artist's mind, from the first creative stirrings to the spiral downward. And by the time you get to the final shot of Kurt thanking the audience at the band's MTV Unplugged show, you don't just feel as if you've gotten to know the man better. You're left completely emotionally spent."

Montage of Heck will premiere on HBO May 4
