The 10 Hottest Women at the CMJ Music Festival

Every fall, musicians, fans and music industry insiders alike descend upon New York City for the CMJ Music Festival. The festival, which sees artists of all genres playing nightclubs, bars and theaters across the entire city, is one of the world’s most important outlets for the discovery of new music.

Past CMJ success stories include such acts as Arcade Fire and Mumford & Sons, who played the festival as unknowns in 2004 and 2009 respectably.

So before you hit the NYC streets ready to discover your new favorite band, check out some of the hottest women who are set to perform at this year's influental festival.

Band: Solo artist

Though she's a relative newcomer, New York City singer/songwriter Jillette Johnson has already been compared to such seasoned lyrical heavyweights as Fiona Apple and Tori Amos. After auditioning for, but ultimately turning down, a slot on NBC's The Voice, Jillette signed with Wind-up Records, which is expected to release her debut album later this year.

Band: Solo artist

Natalie Yepez, better known by her stage name Maluca Mala, is a Dominican musician from New York who's drawn comparisons to Santigold and M.I.A. Though she initially suffered from a crippling case of stage fright, a chance meeting with Diplo at a karaoke bar led to Maluca releasing her first single, 2009's "El Tigeraso". Since then, Maluca's been on a mission to drag Latin music out of the so-called “world music” doldrums.

Band: Solo artist

Sky Ferreira, a 20-year-old singer/songwriter of Portuguese, Brazilian and Native American descent, got her start as a child while singing gospel in her Los Angeles church. After an interesting adolescence in which Sky modeled, studied opera and hung out around a famous family friend, the late, great Michael Jackson, Sky caught the attention of Swedish production duo Bloodshy & Avant. Her debut studio album, I'm Not Alright, is slated to be released later this year.

Jennah Bell, a beautiful 23-year-old singer/songwriter from Northern California's Bay Area, describes her music as being equal parts rock and soul, with a little bit of blues and hip-hop infused along the way. After recently graduating from Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music, Jennah's now ready to set the world on fire with her eclectic sound.

Band: Dum Dum Girls

Dee Dee, Jules, Sandy and Bambi, collectively known as Dum Dum Girls, are a critically acclaimed, all-girl rock band who refer to their distinct sound as "noise pop." Ever since their debut album, 2010's I Will Be, these California girls have not only been touring the world, but consistently releasing new music. Their latest EP, End of Daze, dropped just last month.

Band: Lily & the Parlour Tricks/Rocket & the Ghost

Lily Claire is the classically hot frontwoman of two buzzed-about but currently unsigned New York City bands, Lily & the Parlour Tricks and Rocket & the Ghost. And while her bands have yet to score a record deal, they're both currently enjoying an incredible wave of momentum and an ever-increasing groundswell of fan support.

Band: Tashaki Miyaki

Lucy Miyaki is the drummer and vocalist of Tashaki Miyaki, a Los Angeles based indie rock duo formed in 2011. Their sound, which features beautifully laid-back, hazy arrangements, has been compared to the likes of Mazzy Star and The Raveonettes. The group gained some national exposure this summer while opening for Florence and the Machine.

Band: Icona Pop

Icona Pop is a buzzworthy electropop duo made up of two gorgeous Swedes, Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt. Their first taste of success here in the States came when another duo, Chiddy Bang, featured them on "Mind Your Matters," the first single off their chart-topping debut studio album, Breakfast. Though their first LP won't be released until early 2013, a single from the album, "I Love It", has already been featured as the theme song to MTV's Snooki & JWoww, and also in the trailer to the upcoming Victoria Justice film, Fun Size.

Kimbra, a stunning singer/songwriter from New Zealand, made waves earlier this year when "Somebody That I Used To Know," her collaboration with Gotye, went multi-platinum and became the soundtrack of the first half of 2012. And though she's already a chart-topping solo artist in Australia and New Zealand, Kimbra recently took home the One to Watch award at the 2012 Rolling Stone Awards.

Lakisha Kimberly Robinson, better known as Kilo Kish, is a Brooklyn-based songwriter and vocalist who's been turning heads ever since her debut EP, Homeschool, was released earlier this year. She, along with producer/rapper Mels McCloud and rapper/engineer Smash Simmons, make up the experimental collective known as KoolKatsKlub. Her first full length album, Navy, dropped in September.
