Complex says: Right after Pusha T dropped “My God” back in early February, Consequence immediately took to his Twitter and started sending subliminals in Pusha’s direction. The Cons called him a “clown” and vaguely accusing him of stealing his rhymes. Cons would go on to explain in detail during a bizarre tirade what lyrics he felt Pusha stole from him. Pusha later denied it and didn't really engage Consequence. Cons eventually dropped the original record and, not surprisingly, his gripes with his former label, G.O.O.D. Music, have yet to be resolved.

Complex says: America’s favorite Disney alum surprised everyone when she tweeted a photo of her showing off her grill with a picture of Gucci Mane at the airport. She then went on to tweet that she wished Gucci would jump on a track with her older brother, emo rocker Trace Cyrus. It seems Miley has warmed up to hip-hop and come a long way from that time she claimed she never heard a Jay-Z song. GUCCI!

Complex says: When Kanye jokingly tweeted that abortions can be very expensive, his musing was met with disdain from pro-lifers. At least his heart was (kind of) in the right place, as his sentiment was to promote safe sex and warn people of gold-diggers’ motives. Ultimately, the story was blown out of proportion, but was a reminder that anything you say or do on Twitter, will be held against you.

Complex says: People were speculating about where Rozay would take his talents ever since he made it clear he wanted to turn Maybach Music Group into a powerhouse. When he finally announced that he had partnered with Warner Brothers, it was a pretty big deal (no pun intended). It was also a subtle example of how artists no longer needed to send press releases to let media organizations know something big happened, they could just write a tweet.

Complex says: Wiz and Amb have been Tweeting love notes back and forth all year on Twitter. A few months after Wiz took the plunge and tatted “Amb” on his thumb in honor of his boo Amber Rose, Rose got a similar tat of the nickname “Cam” (Cam is short for Cameron, Wiz’s government first name). Even more amusing than their new body ink was their fuzzy-wuzzy pet names and high-school lovebird jargon littered throughout their tweets. These two must be a drag to be around, even their digital PDA is annoying.

Complex says: Between Tyler, The Creator being upset over us finding Earl Sweatshirt, The Weeknd claiming that we wrote false facts about him (we clearly admitted much of our article was speculation), and Lupe Fiasco responding to our now infamous interview with him—in which he admits to having issues with his own album, we’ve got to say 2011’s been a pretty crazy year for us so far. Sure, we've ruffled a few feathers, but to all of them we say we only wrote the facts to the best of our knowledge. Swag, swag, swag.

Complex says: Despite the spelling error (“quit” is a four-letter word man, come on man), Flocka made it abundantly clear that he had had enough of the rap business when he announced he was done with hip-hop after this year. He’d later say that he’d “rather work at Wal-Mart than rap.” Damn Flocka, you can't leave rap alone, the game needs you!

Complex says: After a visit to Hugh Hef’s famed Playboy Mansion, 50 joked about wanting to be a pimp and needing a few girls for his new line of work. Minutes later Ciara responded with the above tweet. Fif fired back by calling her a bitch without a sense of humor, to which Ciara countered with a link to Latifah’s “U.N.I.T.Y.” Ahh...we're guessing the break-up between these two wasn't as amicable as we once thought.

Complex says: Back in late March—when Charlie Sheen was consistently dominating the news—he continued piling on the wins when he got in the studio with Big Snoop Dogg and Robert Patterson. It was really just another instance of Snoop Dogg being Snoop Dogg and showing up wherever a check might be waiting. The actual song has yet to be released, but we can only assume that's because there was a tiger blood overload in the studio and our brains would explode if we listened to it.

Complex says: In one of the corniest beefs ever, R&B crooner Miguel took offense to Lloyd getting a new haircut that showed off a guns and roses tattoo on the back of his head. Seriously guys? Miguel hinted that Lloyd was trying to copy his style, to which Lloyd replied he would see him in the streets. They eventually settled it which is kind of a shame, because we were looking forward to an epic slapfest.

Complex says: Many believed Jay-Z’s subliminal line on “H.A.M.”—in which he alludes to rappers having “Baby money” that pales in comparison to both his and Beyonce’s—was directed at Birdman. Back in Feburary, the YMCMB mogul took offense to the line and posted the first tweet, kinda owning the phrase. But more recently, he posted the second tweet, effectively dismissing Jay-Z. Either way, Birdman's got a shitload of cash. #BirdmanHandRub

Complex says: When Universal Music Group cease-and-desisted Drake’s “Marvin’s Room” and “Trust Issues,” two songs that Drizzy purposely leaked on his own, it aggravated the rapper enough to publicly call out Universal and make it clear that his work is for his fans, not his label. Hate to break it to ya Drizzy, but the minute you signed that deal your work ceased being for the fans because you basically have no rights to your own music anymore.

Complex says: When Donald Trump caught wind of Mac Miller’s hit song that bears his name, he paid respect to the 19-year-old Pittsburgh rapper for his success of over 16 million YouTube hits. Trump's original Tweet had the YouTube link to the video, but was later deleted and reposted without the link. Trump said he was flattered, to which Mac replied with this awesome comeback. Yo Mac, can we come too?

Complex says: When WorldStarHipHop—the number one source for bum fights and general urban fuckery—went down we had nothing to do all day at work we all wondered what happened. Next thing you know, 50 Cent went on Twitter and started claiming he shut WSHH down. Fif threatened to shut two other sites down proclaiming he was “sick of the hate.” The threats never materialized and it turned out WSHH’s site issues were due to a YouTuber’s copyright claim. Although WSHH went live again the next day, 50 and Q—World Star’s CEO—had a heated argument on Hot 97 which gave us yet another classic 50 Cent call. In case you didn't already know, but when it comes to beef with 50, DON'T PLAY WITH THE ANIMAL!

Complex says:

As if it wasn't enough that Lil B unexpectedly released his album I’m Gay on iTunes, he had to go and Tweet a free download link for it out of love for a good publicity stunt his fans. The album ultimately sold around 1,700 copies its first week. Presumably, that netted the young Based God about $17,000, but damn homie, 1700 ain't a good look.

Complex says: The first three months of 2011 were marked by everyone who ever read Pitchfork co-signing Odd Future as the next big thing. But it was a real shocker when Kanye—arguably hip-hop’s most meticulous rapper ever—co-signed Tyler, The Creator’s “Yonkers” video and called it the video of the year. Tyler responded by saying that even though he’s “a big Kanye West Fan” he also feels like Kanye is his only competition, citing their shared talents in being able to compose music, rap, and direct videos.

Complex says: We found out about one of the most bizarre celebrity couples ever when T-Pain posted a photo of him and Ke$ha canoodling in a Vegas nightclub. In the pic it was painfully obvious that there was something developing between the two stars. Like all power couples, a combo-name was in order and they were dubbed K-Pain. Our favorite part about all this is that for these two hopeless romantics being rich is a half-empty bottle of Hennessy and what can't be more than $50 in singles. Ahh, love.

Complex says: Esteemed music executive Chris Lighty has helped develop the careers of many legendary artists in the past, but it's clear he's not exactly in tune with what's poppin' today. Case in point, when he tweeted a photo of himself with Big Sean, he claimed he was standing next to, "soon to be legend...Wale."

Date: 6/15/2011

Complex says: Lupe was a quote machine this year. First he told us he hates his album, then he called Lil B a genius, but what took the cake was when he called President Barack Obama "the biggest terrorist." Lupe's politically charged comment actually got a rise out of one of Obama's biggest critics, Bill O'Reilly. Bill O’Reilly called Lupe a pinhead and said that his show The O’Reilly Factor reached out to Lupe to appear on the show, but Lupe declined. Lupe let the world know that he never even got an offer. Eventually Lupe appeared on the show in a heavily-edited interview where he made a sloppy defense of his original statement. Which unequivocally proved that Lupe was no Cam'Ron.

Date: 7/8/2011

Complex says: During the creation of Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest, Q-Tip spoke out against the film citing that director Michael Rappaport wasn’t respecting his views. Controversy over how the film was being made continued to make headlines throughout the entire process as Rappaport and Q-Tip got into a back and forth. But In the end, Tip came around and encouraged fans to see the movie. So we guess all is well that ends well?

Date: 2/28/2011

Complex says: After Wale made a joke referencing Kid Cudi's infamous "we don't fuck with you musically" line that publicized their beef and became an Internet meme, the two rappers exchanged a few friendly tweets and effectively ended their feud. Wale later revealed to us that the two had previously squashed their beef with a phone call and have recorded new material together.

Complex says: When Common was invited to Michelle Obama’s poetry reading at The White House, FOX News called Common a “vile rapper" and Sarah Palin chimed in on Twitter. Com took it in stride, acknowledging their opposition, but opting not to get defensive. If you ask us, Fox and Palin got off light. If they had really riled Common up, he might have did them like he did Ice Cube.

Complex says: Who said Twitter is a waste of time? After 50 Cent told his followers to invest in penny stock H&H Imports, he reportedly netted $8.7 million. 50 later insisted that his tips were only his opinion. However, lawyers still speculated that 50’s stunt could potentially mean lawsuits against the company because he didn't initially reveal his position within the company. Which makes perfect sense since after the financial meltdown and mass scale robbery by companies like AIG, the only person who deserves to be punished is Curtis Jackson.

Date: 6/17/2011

Complex says: When Chris Brown tweeted an underhanded compliment aimed towards Odd Future-affiliated crooner Frank Ocean, Ocean responded by comparing him to Sisqo and Ike Turner—a jab at his blond hairstyle and prior assault charges. Breezy began blatantly disrespecting and taunting Odd Future and eventually Tyler, The Creator jumped in and made a few sly remarks of his own (See all the tweets here).

Things took a turn for the worst when footage surfaced online of two of Breezy's goons harassing Frank Ocean while he was driving. Eventually, cooler heads prevailed and the beef was squashed but let this be proof that digital beefs can get really real, really fast.

Complex says: One of the ugliest public war of words we're ever seen took place this year when Joe Budden and Esther Baxter got in to it on Twitter (see all the insane tweets here). The two of them became a worldwide trending topic after Joey accused his then-girlfriend of cheating on him with NFL star Derrick Ward while pregnant with his child and threatened to release nude pics of her on the Internet. Baxter fired back claiming she never denied being pregnant and said she would leak pics that showed Budden was an abusive murderer.

Budden later hit up Funk Flex and dropped a freestyle telling his side of the story. Meanwhile, Baxter leaked pics of their dead fetus in a toilet, pics of her bruise marks, and did a video interview with Bossip explaining what happened (Google it yourself, no way we're linking to a post with a dead baby in it). In the end, it was totally TMI and probably the most uncivil way to handle a breakup. Let this be a lesson to everyone: Sometimes you need log off Twitter and take a chill pill.
