New York Postreports two people were killed when a gender reveal stunt in Mexico went horribly wrong.

The expecting parents paid for a plane to carry a banner revealing their baby’s gender as they stood in a boat off the coast of the Nichupte Lagoon in Cancun with family and friends. Guests looked on in amazement as the aircraft, described as a single-engine Cessna 206, performed a series of stunts. “It’s a girl,” one person exclaimed as the plane flew overhead.

Moments before this gender reveal took a tragic turn, an onlooker commented, “It’s all good as long as it doesn’t end up crashing into us.” Shortly thereafter, the plane took a nosedive straight into the water, much to the horror of the guests. It is believed that four passengers were aboard the aircraft. One died before the rescue team could retrieve them from the site of the crash. Another died while receiving first aid.

The Federal Civil Aviation Agency has launched an investigation into the incident.

Christopher Pekny, 28, died in late February while he was in his New York home working on a device that would be used for a gender reveal party exploded. Earlier that month, a Michigan man died after he was struck by metal shrapnel that was projected from a small cannon intended for a gender reveal. The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Three parked cars were also struck by the shrapnel.
