Major political figures including Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have spoken out against the Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, allowing states to outlaw abortion. President Joe Biden addressed the matter shortly after noon, viewable above.

On Friday, the Supreme Court officially overturned the 1973 decision, which protected abortion rights across the country. “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start," wrote Justice Samuel Alito in the ruling. "Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. ... It is time to heed the Constitution and return the issue of abortion to the people's elected representatives."

Shortly after the announcement, many current and past elected officials shared their responses on Twitter. Many, including former U.S. President Barack Obama, were particularly critical of the ruling, which impacts millions across the United States and puts women at risk.

“Overturning Roe and outlawing abortions will never make them go away," wrote Ocasio-Cortez in a tweet. “It only makes them more dangerous, especially for the poor + marginalized."

"Today, the Supreme Court not only reversed nearly 50 years of precedent, it relegated the most intensely personal decision someone can make to the whims of politicians and ideologues—attacking the essential freedoms of millions of Americans," wrote Barack Obama in a series of tweets on Friday morning, urging people to vote in the midterms this November. "If we want judges who will protect all, and not just some, of our rights, then we've got to elect officials committed to doing the same."

Many artists, actors, and activists shared their responses on social media as well.

"I’m outraged! What the supreme court has done is BULLSHIT," wrote Halle Berry. “Something has to be done! Guns have more rights than women. Stop this war on women & keep your laws off of our bodies. We have to ban together & NOT accept this! We can’t just post about it, we must DO SOMETHING about it."

The decision has also led to certain companies offering to cover travel costs for abortions if employees live in an affected states. Per the Hollywood ReporterDisney, Netflix, Comcast, Paramount, Warner Bros Discovery, Sony, WME, CAA, and UTA have all communicated with employees about their respective healthcare policies.

Netflix is offering $10,00 lifetime allowance for travel reimbursement, which also covers travel costs for cancer treatment, transplants, and gender affirming care. Disney is also covering travel costs, as is Paramount.

Their tweets are followed by posts from artists, actors, and other notable figures including Viola Davis, Keke Palmer, Questlove, Shonda Rhimes, Mark Ruffalo, and more.

Across the country, states have already passed bills restricting choice. If you're looking for ways to respond, @PPFA, @USOWomen, and many other groups have been sounding the alarm on this issue for years—and will continue to be on the front lines of this fight. pic.twitter.com/PpXBEcbL2S

Overturning Roe and outlawing abortions will never make them go away.

It only makes them more dangerous, especially for the poor + marginalized.

People will die because of this decision. And we will never stop until abortion rights are restored in the United States of America.

— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) June 24, 2022

Most Americans believe the decision to have a child is one of the most sacred decisions there is, and that such decisions should remain between patients and their doctors.

Today’s Supreme Court opinion will live in infamy as a step backward for women's rights and human rights.

— Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) June 24, 2022

Overturning Roe v. Wade and denying women the right to control their own bodies is an outrage and in defiance of what the American people want. Democrats must now end the filibuster in the Senate, codify Roe v. Wade, and once again make abortion legal and safe.

My statement on the Supreme Court overturning #RoeVWade: pic.twitter.com/a3iEBTuctv

— Elizabeth Warren (@SenWarren) June 24, 2022

The reversal of Roe will be recorded in the history books in the same nauseous tones as decisions like Dred Scott, Korematsu, Plessy, and Buck.

This is an institution that has legitimized slavery, concentration camps, and eugenics.

This decision is the same.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) June 24, 2022

This ruling is outrageous, heartbreaking, and puts Americans' lives in danger right now. They overturned Roe, but we will never give up. We will overcome Dobbs.

— Cory Booker (@CoryBooker) June 24, 2022

For 50 years, Roe v. Wade safeguarded the right to choose for millions of women in Georgia + nationwide.

Today, the Supreme Court struck down abortion rights.

I am appalled. Enraged. Undaunted & ready to fight back.

Our freedom matters. Our rights matter. We will not be still. pic.twitter.com/cfC8QLrxcN

Abortion care IS health care. It was so before this. And it will remain so after this.

We don’t care what a far-right extremist Supreme Court that is in a crisis of legitimacy says. Your racist, sexist, classist ruling won’t stop us from accessing the care we need.

— Cori Bush (@CoriBush) June 24, 2022

Because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, the Republican Party & their supermajority on the Supreme Court, American women today have less freedom than their mothers. Radical Republicans are now charging ahead with their crusade to criminalize health freedom.

— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) June 24, 2022

A woman’s fundamental health decisions are her own to make, in consultation with her doctor & her loved ones – not to be dictated by far-right politicians. While Republicans seek to punish & control women, Democrats will keep fighting ferociously to enshrine Roe v. Wade into law.

— Nancy Pelosi (@SpeakerPelosi) June 24, 2022

I’m outraged! What the supreme court has done is BULLSHIT. Something has to be done! Guns have more rights than women.

Stop this war on women & keep your laws off of our bodies. We have to ban together & NOT accept this! We can’t just post about it, we must DO SOMETHING about it

— Halle Berry (@halleberry) June 24, 2022

And so it goes….Gutted. Now more than ever we have to use our voice and power! WE the people……🙏🏿🙏🏿https://t.co/8gFi0AbNSQ

There are so many things that need to be fixed in this country right now- 240 characters aren’t enough. The fact that controlling a woman’s rights was top priority- it just tells you everything you need to know. It’s about control, not care.

I’m devastated.

— Keke Palmer (@KekePalmer) June 24, 2022

This is devastating news for families - Men and women - who believe the government should not decide when and with whom they become parents. This is not the end of this fight for human rights. https://t.co/spFusnvwbF

The three #Trump #SCOTUS appointees all lied to Congress and to the American people during their confirmation hearings, when they all stated that #ROEVWADE was settled law. They are all radical traditionalist Catholics and are shoving America ever further to the right.

— bettemidler (@BetteMidler) June 24, 2022

I don’t even know what to say other than absolutely fuck this

— FINNEAS (@finneas) June 24, 2022

Further, I hope people finally get that VOTING MATTERS!

A corrupt, racist, money AND power hungry imp got to put THREE Supreme Court justices on the bench.

Those three said they would protect precedent KNOWING their goal was to overturn every right they deemed inappropriate.

— yvette nicole brown (@YNB) June 24, 2022

And I hope all the smug women who are pro-life realize that if they have a life-threatening pregnancy or if they or their daughter is raped or the victim of incest and a pregnancy is the result THEY or their precious little gumdrop will have to carry that child to term too.

👍🏻

— yvette nicole brown (@YNB) June 24, 2022

This is actually happening.

& I’ll mindfully refrain from finger pointing but I know a gajillion people who are way too passive for my tastes when I bring up current events and they just generally have no opinion (or can afford to bury head in the sand—-or can’t afford & still do) looking extra hard at them

….& if you believe Manchin is “alarmed”then I gotta bridge to sell you too. Anyone expressing “shock” (or googling “who is Manchin?”over the events of the past 10yrs is now part of the problem. Point blank. War has been declared on us. Some refuse to acknowledge.

If abortion is banned nationwide, pregnancy-related deaths could increase 21 percent nationwide, and 33 percent among Black women.

— Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) June 24, 2022

Banning abortion is about controlling women and trans men.

It is about white supremacy, the patriarchy and misogyny.

It’s a sad day for America.

— Alyssa Milano (@Alyssa_Milano) June 24, 2022

This nation was founded on the separation between church & state. The Supreme Court has now been made illegitimate by destruction of that separation & turned into a political organ of the religious right. We are going to have to fight for the founding principals of our nation. https://t.co/77FRVp0Ci0

— Mark Ruffalo (@MarkRuffalo) June 24, 2022

This ruling today at the height of Pride Month is particularly devastating. The foundation upon which Roe rested is the same that has protected so many of our rights as LGBTQ+ people. Clarence Thomas says as much. We’re all in this together ⚧🏳️‍🌈✊🏻 https://t.co/4Do9DAu380
