The Montgomery Police Department has announced that more arrest warrants have been issued for three men involved in the violent brawl that took place at a riverfront dock last week.
On Tuesday, Montgomery Police made the announcement with Police Chief Darryl Albert identifying the suspects as three white men and stating they are facing assault charges. One of those men has already surrendered and is currently in custody. The three men will not be facing riot or hate crime charges.
A group of people were engaged in a brawl that started over a dispute regarding a parking space at the riverfront dock on Saturday. In a video that's been shared all over social media, a Black man who was working the dock was attacked by a group of white men. The confrontation turned into a full-out brawl when another group of people assisted the dock worker with his attackers.
In the ensuing melee, people were throwing punches, tossing others into the water, and getting hit with a foldable chair. Mayor Steven L. Reed issued a statement via social media stating justice will be served as warrants have been signed. According to Reed, the brawl was "an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred."
"Last night, the Montgomery Police Department acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job," Mayor Reed wrote. "Warrants have been signed and justice will be served. This was an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred."
He continued, "As our police department investigates these intolerable actions, we should not become desensitized to violence of any kind in our community. Those who choose violent actions will be held accountable by our criminal Justice system."
