Social media addicts and IG models rejoice. Your fave social platform has an important update. As TechCrunch reports, Instagram has released a new tool that lets you download all your data. It’s every narcissist’s dream come true!
Jokes aside, I guess the update is kind of cool. To get a full download of your content, including "photos, videos, archived Stories, profile, info, comments, and non-ephemeral messages" all you have to do is submit your email address on the website—the feature isn’t yet available on the app just yet. A spokesperson for Instagram explained, “the Data Download tool is currently accessible to everyone on the web, but access via iOS and Android is still rolling out.” The whole process of getting your content may take up to 48 hours, but admit it, you’ve spent longer trying to get that perfectly angled and lit selfie.
It’s worth nothing, Instagram and it’s parent company Facebook, had to release the feature in order to be in compliance with the EU’s data portability rule under the new GDPR privacy regulations, which will go into effect on May 25. It’s also just a nice thing to do, and by that I mean, stop holding your users’ content hostage. People will always be thirsty for likes. No need to hold onto their content for insurance. The move is also sure to discourage users from using questionable and potentially insecure third-party apps to get their content.
