Police Say 10 People Were Killed in Colorado Grocery Store Shooting (UPDATE)

Law enforcement responded to shooting at a King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado. Police said that multiple people, including an officer, have died.

UPDATED 11:43 a.m. ET: In a new press release, Boulder Police confirmed the names of the victims. They also shared an updated timeline of the shooting, which occurred at a King Soopers supermarket:

“At approximately 2:40 p.m on Monday, March 22, officers were dispatched to the the King Soopers at 3600 Table Mesa Drive for a report of an active shooter. Officers arrived on scene within minutes and immediately entered the store and engaged the suspect. There was an exchange of gunfire during which the suspect was shot. No other officers were injured.

The victims’ names, announced by the Boulder County Coroner’s Office, are as follows:

  • Denny Strong, 20
  • Neven Stanisic, 23
  • Rikki Olds, 25
  • Tralona Bartkowiak, 49
  • Suzanne Fountain, 59
  • Teri Leiker, 51
  • Eric Talley, 51
  • Kevin Mahoney, 61
  • Lynn Murray, 62
  • Jody Waters, 65

The police also shared a photo of the suspect.

UPDATED 3/23, 10:45 a.m. ET: During a press conference Tuesday morning, Boulder Police identified the suspect, who is facing 10 counts of murder in the first degree. The suspect was identified as 21-year-old man Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa from Arvada. Additional details, including arrest documents, are expected to be made available to the public soon.

The names of the 10 victims, who ranged in age from 20 to 65 years old, were also read during the press conference.

UPDATED 3/22, 10:50 p.m. ET: Boulder Police said that ten people, including Officer Eric Talley, were killed during the shooting. 

Chief: Our hearts go out to all families impacted. There are 10 fatalities. She identified slain Police Officer Eric Talley, who was one of the first on the scene. She calls officer's actions "heroic."

Police/coroner will not release names of other victims until families have been notified. Chief says she knows there are families waiting in anguish to hear about loved ones:
"I am sensitive to that, and we will work around the clock to get this accomplished."

“I also want to stress how incredibly sorry I am for all victims who were killed at King Soopers,” Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty said at a press conference that was held on Monday night. “These were people going about their day, doing their food shopping, and their lives were cut abruptly and tragically short by the shooter who is now in custody.”

UPDATED 3/22, 9:05 p.m. ET: 

The Boulder Police Department announced that “multiple” people, including an officer, were killed in the shooting. They also said that the person of interest has been apprehended and is being treated for injuries.

Authorities responded to an active shooter situation in Boulder, Colorado on Monday.

At 2:49 p.m. MDT, the Boulder Police Department tweeted that there was an active shooter at the King Soopers grocery store on Table Mesa Drive, advising locals to avoid the area and sharing that police were en route. Police were responding to a report that an individual was shot in the parking lot of the grocery store, according to ABC News and an NBC affiliate. When they arrived, the police were reportedly shot at.

Helicopter feed provided by CBS 4 Denver showed multiple ambulances and SWAT vehicles arriving at the scene around 3 p.m. MDT with several first responders on the scene blocking off roads. Roughly 30 minutes later, a man was seen escorted out of the store in handcuffs with wounds on his body. Others were escorted outside without handcuffs after, along with some employees, who said they were able to exit through the back of the building safely.  

Officers were still surrounding the store in their respective positions with weapons drawn after the handcuffed man was escorted out of the building. It is unclear if the man was involved.

Video from outside of the scene showed officers announcing over a loudspeaker: “The entire building is surrounded, you need to surrender. Come out, put your hands up, unarmed.”
