UPDATED 1/23, 4:35 p.m. ET:The death toll has risen to 11 after a victim succumbed to their injuries at a hospital, according to Reuters.

UPDATED 1/23, 1:00 p.m. ET: The gunman suspected of killing 10 people Saturday night at a ballroom in Monterey Park, California was found dead over the weekend.

Huu Can Tran, 72, was pronounced dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Sunday, CNN reports. Tran’s death comes just 12 hours after he carried out the shooting, and took place as a SWAT team closed in on him.

“My understanding is that he may have come because his ex-wife was reveling, celebrating the Lunar New Year, and it sounded like there was a history of domestic violence, which is unfortunate,” Monterey Park Mayor Henry Lo told reporters.

Law enforcement is still working to find a motive behind the shooting.

At least 10 people are killed after a shooting took place Saturday night near a Lunar New Year celebration in the Los Angeles suburb of Monterey Park, CNN reports.

The shooting happened just before 10:30 p.m. local time, when a gunman opened fire at a dance studio, killing 10 and wounding 10. It’s worth noting Monterey Park is an Asian American enclave, with 65% of its citizens identifying as Asian American, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

As of Sunday morning, the gunman remains at large.

“We don’t know if it’s targeted,” Sheriff’s Capt. Andrew Meyer said at a press briefing early Sunday. “We will look at every angle, including if it was a hate crime or not.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom took to Twitter on Sunday to share a statement about the tragic event.

“Monterey Park should have had a night of joyful celebration of the Lunar New Year. Instead, they were the victims of a horrific and heartless act of gun violence,” he wrote. “Our hearts mourn as we learn more about the devastating acts of last night.”
